 Ceramic Tile/
Natural Stone
Tile Floors have been around for centuries, and with good reason. They are durable, stain resistant, wear resistant, easy to care for and beautiful. With over thousands of man made tiles and natural stones from around the world- the options are endless and creativity abounds!
There are three basic types of tile- Ceramic, Porcelain and Natural Stone. Traditional ceramic tiles are composed of a clay and mineral mixture and are kiln fired with a glazed surface.
Porcelain tiles are made from finer ingredients and baked at higher temperatures, resulting in a harder, less porous tile. They are made both with glazed surfaces or in through-body, where the color is mixed right into the body of the tile.
Natural stones are just that- stones from the earth. They are cut and formed into tiles of various sizes, with different textures. Some are tumbled, having very rustic appearance with chipped edges and small holes in the surface. Others are honed and polished to produce smooth and/or shiny surfaces. Limestone, Travertine, Marble and Slate are all types of natural stone. NOTE: it is important to seal any natural stone tile during installation and as regular maintenance!
Tiles are also categorized into floor or wall tiles. Floor tiles have harder wear layers to stand up to foot traffic. Any floor tile can be applied to a wall or countertop.
Wall tiles are generally thinner, with a smoother surface. They are often available in smaller sizes such as 4”x 4” or 6” x 6”. They are not suitable for foot traffic, and should not be used on floors.
Ceramic tiles come in an array of sizes: 1”x1”, 2 x2”, 4”x4”, 6”x6”, 12”x12”, 16”x16”, 18”x18”, 20”x20” and more…
Different shapes such as rectangular, hexagon and intricately designed decorative pieces are also available. Create a custom medallion from Monticello Tile Design to give your home a truly unique touch!
All tiles need to be grouted to complete the instsallation. Wall tile with grout joints less than 1/8” use un-sanded grout. Floor tiles, or tiles with grout joints larger than 1/8” use a sanded grout. Epoxy grout is best for showers, or when light grout colors are chosen, as it is stain, mildew, and mold resistant; and can always be cleaned back to it’s original color. Each type of grout is available in a wide array of color choices to compliment any tile.
